Security and organized crime Many foreign people think that Russia is filled with Mafia and it's very dangerous to travel here. There is Mafia, but if you stay away from “ bad ” places, it is not much more dangerous than anywhere else. There are still many small organised gangs and  street crimes. An alarming trend is the growing police involvement in crimes.

Terrorism is one of the threats for people living in Russia. As an example, the hostage taking in Beslan in 2004 has left hundreds of mourning families. Unfortunately, such tragedy may probably again.

The Russian police (Militia): an officer checks the documents of young men. In fact, on arrival in any city of Russia everybody is obliged to be registered in a place of residing within 3 days.
