Despite the fact that Russia is in touch with European culture, and because of many reasons (history, habits…), westerners are likely to meet cultural differences when visiting Russia for the first time.
Compared to western standards, Russians are warm and hospitable. They usually entertain at home and a small present is expected from a host.
They are eager to learn about other countries and therefore like discussions about general political or social topics.
The Russians listen attentively and do not interrupt. Questions are avoided as a sign of lack of knowledge. Meetings can last for hours without any solution made at the end. Humour manifestation and emotions are common during a business meeting. Smiling by politeness is not common and does not show respect. Handshake is a universal greeting; kisses are rare.
